Imagine Eastenders, but on stage at the Royal Opera House.
Mark-Anthony Turnage‘s Greek is a gritty, contemporary retelling of the Oedipus myth, which transplants an orchestra to the foul-mouthed, booze-soaked East End of London.
Putting the opera into soap opera, Turnage always raises eyebrows, (remember Anna Nicole?) but there’s more to this production than just flagrant daring. The punchy music is infectiously rhythmic -you’ll tapping a foot or a finger. The lead performance is fantastic- Eddy is sung by bright young thing Marcus Farnsworth, whose baritone won him the prestigious Wigmore Award in 2009, and exceedingly high praise from The Telegraph.
